Rain World provides a little tutorial at the beginning, but very soon you will find yourself on your own, left to get used to how, um, sluggish the slugcat is at first. It crawls across the ground, up and down objects at a speed that is so slow that it is hard to get used to. You crawl through pipes to access the hundreds of rooms on offer in this world, hunting for food, whether to be in fruit or the capturing and eating of flies to keep your strength up.
With the Mark of Communication, the player is able to return to Looks to the Moon and communicate with her. Looks to the Moon has much to say, but is not very friendly if Slugcat ate any of her Neurons. If the player follows the advice of their guide and steals Neurons from Five Pebbles to return to Looks to the Moon, she thanks Slugcat for the help. Bringing Neurons restores some of Looks to the Moon’s memories and abilities, and she is able to read Pearls brought to her, giving the player much more insight into the history and lore of the world.
At the point where identical Slugcats usually join the player’s journey, Artificer remains alone. Golden tendrils begin to sprout and trail from them, dissolving the lower part of their body. The ending cutscene triggers while Artificer is still swimming, with no sign of the light that other Slugcats see in their Ascensions.
