Individuals can invest in the Dow, which would mean gaining exposure to all of the companies listed in it, through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). Stocks with higher share prices are given greater weight in the index. So a higher percentage move in a higher-priced component will have a greater impact on the final calculated value. At the Dow’s inception, Charles Dow calculated the average by adding the prices of the 12 Dow component stocks and dividing by 12. Over time, there were additions and subtractions to the index that had to be accounted for, such as mergers and stock splits.

The one before that came on the final trading day of 2021, when Dow closed at 36,488.63 on Dec. 29, 2021, smashing the record it set on Nov. 8, 2021.

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Index Components

The following is a list of the milestone closing levels of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. There are roughly two dozen different Dow Jones indexes that apply some sort of environmental, societal, and governance (ESG) screening. Some exclude certain industries from a region or index, such as gambling and weapons. Others apply S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment to geographic regions.

The other major U.S. stock indices, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, also hit record highs and have outpaced the Dow with their year-to-date gains. But the historic peak was delayed by strong economic news, an upturn in March inflation data and statements from Fed officials suggesting interest-rate cuts wouldn’t be coming soon. Also referred to as the Dow 30, the index is considered to be a gauge of the broader U.S. economy. Broad market indexes only include securities with reasonable size and liquidity so that they can be purchased in an institutional size portfolio. Many micro-cap securities don’t trade with enough volume to be efficiently included in products such as index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETF).

Incremental closing milestones

  1. A stronger stock market should also provide a windfall to the many Americans watching their 401(k) balances.
  2. The Dow fell 17% in three months, from 2,864.60 on Aug. 2 to 2,365.10 on Oct. 11, 1990.
  3. After experiencing three of the biggest drops in history during the spring of 2020, it broke 30,000 on Nov. 24 and ended the year at a record high of 30,606.48.
  4. Individuals can invest in the Dow, which would mean gaining exposure to all of the companies listed in it, through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA).
  5. Indexes react to actual trades, and while investors may trade on the expectation of good or bad news, indexes are mathematical calculations that have nothing to do with emotion.

This also means that stock splits can have an impact on the index, whereas they would not for a market cap-weighted index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is a stock market index that tracks 30 large, publicly-owned blue-chip companies trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. The Dow Jones is named after Charles Dow, who created the index in 1896 along with his business partner, Edward Jones.

The average closed at 2,999.75 on Monday, July 16, 1990, and closed unchanged the following day;[17] however, it would take until April 17 of the next year for the Dow to finally close above 3,000. The easiest way to invest in the Dow may be to buy shares in State Street Global Advisors’ SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust, which trades under the ticker symbol DIA. On Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers Holding, Inc. (an investment bank) declared bankruptcy. On Wednesday, panicky bankers withdrew $144 billion from money market funds, almost causing a collapse. The index closed above 18,000 on Dec. 23, and then closed its high for the year at 18,053.71 on Dec. 26.

That means if you had invested in a fund in 1983 that mirrored the Dow Jones industrial average, $1,000 would now be $32,000, or $10,500 in 1983 dollars. The Dow Jones Industrial average has doubled every 8.1 years, or 2,969 days, since 1983. Before tickmill review that, it took more than 24 years for the index to double from 625 in the spring of 1959 to September 1983. 22This was the fastest 1,000 point gain taking only 5 trading days from closing above 32,000 to close above 33,000. The Dow’s activity broke new records in terms of downward movement in 2009. While it wasn’t as dramatic as the Great Depression, the drop happened much more quickly.

Investors tend to favor deceleration because it means prices are still moving up — but at a more sustainable rate. This also has implications for interest rates — the cost of borrowing money for everything from credit cards to auto loans and, indirectly, for mortgage rates. “40,000 is a great milestone, but end of the day there isn’t much difference between 39,999 and 40k,” Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, said in a statement emailed Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a stock index of 30 U.S. blue-chip large-cap companies, which has become synonymous with the American stock market as a whole. The index, however, only has 30 companies, and the index itself is price-weighted, meaning that it does not always present an accurate reflection of the broader stock market. The Dow is not calculated using a weighted arithmetic average and does not represent its component companies’ market cap unlike the S&P 500.
